Nintendo Switch 2 Launches Amid High Demand and Price Gouging

REDMOND, Wash. — Nintendo‘s Switch 2 debuted on June 5, 2025, quickly becoming the fastest-selling console in the company’s history. The device sold out at most retailers, with prices escalating beyond the $449 MSRP due to high demand.
Many online stores sold out within hours, and those still offering the console are charging inflated prices. For example, Walmart lists the Switch 2 at around $749, significantly higher than its retail price. Despite these challenges, fans can still find consoles in some local stores, where they may have stock reserved for walk-in buyers.
The Switch 2 features significant upgrades over its predecessor. It boasts a larger display, enhanced graphics capabilities, and compatibility with most original Switch games. Players can enjoy smoother performance in popular titles like “Tears of the Kingdom,” and new games such as “Cyberpunk 2077” are now accessible.
The updated Joy-Cons offer a better user experience, magnetically attaching to the console and providing the option to use them as mice. However, some users noted issues with the should buttons due to straps, and the internal memory could be limiting for modern games.
Mario Kart World, one of the launch titles, introduces expansive racing environments while maintaining competitive elements. Critics remark it feels in line with its predecessor, Mario Kart 8. Meanwhile, another title, Welcome Tour, serves as an interactive showcase of the new console’s features.
Despite the initial issues, early reviews praise the Switch 2 for essential improvements. While some players contemplate the necessity of upgrading soon, many are eager to join the excitement surrounding new titles and enhanced gameplay experiences. Nintendo has limited orders, aiming to discourage reselling and ensure availability for genuine gamers.
