Nintendo Warns Users Not to Remove Switch 2’s Protective Film

REDMOND, Wash. — Nintendo has issued a warning for customers purchasing the upcoming Switch 2, advising them to avoid removing the protective film layer on the device’s LCD display. This caution comes just before the console’s launch on June 5, 2025.
The protective film serves a critical function. According to Nintendo, it is designed to prevent fragments from scattering if the screen is damaged. “Do not peel it off,” the user manual states clearly. This film is distinct from a typical screen protector, meant instead to safeguard the screen during manufacturing and initial usage.
This precaution may not be new to seasoned Nintendo Switch players, but it is important for newcomers. Nintendo has previously used similar protective layers on other models, including the OLED Switch, reinforcing that this layer is essential for user safety.
As the company prepares for the Switch 2’s release, potential buyers have already shown interest in the device. Some who buy the console at launch will need to wait for a mandatory day-one update to access its core functions.
Nintendo has also made waves in the gaming community by struggling to meet the initial demand for the Switch 2, especially in its home market of Japan. Some customers have reported difficulties securing a console amidst rising popularity.
The guideline regarding the screen’s protective film is located in the “Careful Usage” section of the user manual. Although it is typical for electronic devices to include such protective measures, previous instances, such as with the Samsung Galaxy Fold, have shown that misunderstandings can lead to customer complaints and warranty issues.
Additionally, Nintendo is set to offer its official screen protector for the Switch 2. This product, designed to be applied directly on top of the existing protective film, will help shield against scratches and protect the screen from debris. The official screen protector is available for pre-order at $39.99, bundled with a carrying case.
