Oppo Find N5 Folding Smartphone Press Briefing

LONDON, England — Chinese smartphone manufacturer Oppo unveiled its flagship Find N5 folding smartphone on Thursday in a bid to challenge competition from Samsung and Huawei. With a starting price of 2,499 Singapore dollars (approximately $1,867.70), this innovative device positions itself at the forefront of foldable technology.

When closed, the Find N5 resembles a standard bar-shaped smartphone featuring a 6.62-inch display. However, users can fold it outward to reveal an expansive 8.12-inch tablet screen. The design boasts an ultra-thin profile, measuring just 8.93 millimeters thick when closed and 4.21 millimeters when opened.

Equipped with a remarkably slim 5,600 milliampere-hour (mAh) battery, the Find N5 utilizes advanced silicon-carbon materials to ensure high capacity without bulk. This advancement reflects Oppo’s commitment to delivering powerful devices in compact forms.

Oppo aims to attract customers from key players like Samsung and Huawei, both of which are exploring new designs to rejuvenate their offerings amid a market slowdown. Earlier this week, Huawei introduced its trifold phone with three screens, showcasing the competitive landscape.

One of the standout features of the Find N5 is its triple-camera system, equipped with a telephoto lens that promises up to 30x zoom, enhanced by an AI-powered feature called AI Telescope Zoom. This capability positions the Find N5 as a versatile device for photography enthusiasts.

In addition to imaging innovations, the Find N5 includes an AI assistant designed to summarize documents, phone calls, and translated video calls. Addressing privacy concerns, Oppo stated that certain data is processed locally on the device while other information is stored in the cloud, collaborating with Google for AI and cloud computing services in international markets.

An Oppo spokesperson affirmed the company’s adherence to local laws and privacy requirements, emphasizing their commitment to security.

In a competitive landscape, Samsung has also expanded its AI functionalities, integrating Google’s Gemini AI assistant and enabling task automation across applications. Oppo has introduced O+ Connect, which allows users to wirelessly link their Find N5 to Mac computers, facilitating instant file transfers and enabling remote control capabilities.

This remote feature lets users manage their Mac’s display directly from their smartphone, so long as both devices connect to the same Wi-Fi. Oppo highlighted that O+ Connect fully complies with macOS regulations, showcasing its commitment to user privacy and data protection.

Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, remarked that the Find N5 illustrates the potential of flexible display technology. While Huawei’s Mate XT generated excitement, Wood noted that the traditional book-like design remains commercially viable, favored by brands like Samsung and now Oppo.

As the smartphone landscape evolves, the Oppo Find N5 aims to set new benchmarks with its innovative designs and AI capabilities, putting it in direct competition with other industry leaders.
