October Pink Highlights Skin Care for Breast Cancer Patients
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – As part of October Pink, health experts are emphasizing the importance of skin care for breast cancer patients. Patients undergoing chemotherapy often experience significant changes to their skin, affecting their overall wellbeing.
Dr. Samara Kouzak, a dermatologist, spoke about the critical need to maintain skin health. “The skin is the largest organ and plays vital roles in immunity and temperature regulation. For cancer patients, preserving skin health becomes essential,” she explained.
Elisângela Maria Torres da Silva, a 34-year-old Angolan hairdresser, discovered her breast cancer after feeling pain while dressing. She sought help in July 2024 and received treatment at the National Cancer Institute’s III hospital in Vila Isabel, Rio de Janeiro. After eight sessions of chemotherapy and a recent surgery, she is now participating in a fashion show organized to celebrate October Pink.
“I decided to join because it’s a beautiful event that lifts our self-esteem. The teams provide valuable support and advice,” Elisângela shared.
The fashion show, featuring patients as models, included various beauty services such as haircuts, manicures, and massages. Marcelo Bello, a mastologist and director of the INCA III, highlighted the significance of such events. “This celebration, ongoing for over 15 years, is a way to value life. Early detection significantly improves the chances of cure,” Bello said.
Social worker Vânia Braz, one of the event’s organizers, noted that it creates a sense of community among patients. “Entertainment and self-esteem are equally vital in healthcare. This event promotes joy and helps reduce stigma around the disease,” she stated.
Additionally, Mariana Xavier, acting Secretary for Women’s Policies and Care in Rio, reported that over 250 scarves were collected for donation. “We also organized workshops for women waiting for treatment, including facial massages and skin care sessions,” she said.
The event reached patients who are hospitalized or currently undergoing chemotherapy, ensuring they also received beauty services and therapeutic visits. October Pink serves as a reminder of the importance of early diagnosis and patient support in the fight against breast cancer.
