Sony is marking the 30th anniversary of the PlayStation brand with a series of nostalgic and limited-time offerings. A special software update for the PS5, rolled out on December 2, allows users to transform their console into a retro version reminiscent of previous PlayStation generations. This update includes custom sounds and startup options that mimic the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4, complete with themed swirls on the PS5 desktop and the classic Sony Computer Entertainment logo on startup.

The update also features a 30th Anniversary screen and the iconic PS1 startup sound. Additionally, users will receive a thank you message when shutting down or restarting their console, acknowledging their part in Sony’s gaming journey. This update is available for a limited time, adding a touch of nostalgia for long-time PlayStation fans.

In addition to the software update, Best Buy has confirmed a restock of the limited edition PS5 Slim 30th Anniversary Edition and the DualSense Controller 30th Anniversary Edition. These items, which feature a retro PS1 gray design, will be available exclusively through the Best Buy app via the Best Buy Drops feature. This restock is particularly significant for those who missed out on earlier pre-order opportunities, as stock is extremely limited.

Furthermore, the highly sought-after PlayStation Portal 30th Anniversary Limited Edition is back in stock at PS Direct. This remote play device, which allows users to play PS5 games over the internet, comes in a special retro colorway and has been difficult to find due to stock shortages. This may be one of the last chances to secure this limited edition hardware before the holidays.

Sony has also released a special thank you video for fans, highlighting some of the most memorable games from the past three decades. This video is part of a broader celebration that includes themed events and merchandise, such as a rethemed tube carriage on the London Underground.
