Kenneth Okonkwo Leaves Labour Party, Cites Leadership Issues

Kenneth Okonkwo, who was the spokesperson for the Labour Party‘s presidential campaign, has announced that he is leaving the party. In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, he expressed his disappointment over ongoing internal conflicts within the party.

Okonkwo also mentioned that he is parting ways with Peter Obi, the party’s former presidential candidate. He believes that Obi failed to address the issues within the party that are hindering its progress.

In his statement titled ‘Political Journey to a Great Nigeria’, Okonkwo asserted his commitment to a country founded on the principles of equity, justice, and fairness. However, he is concerned that current political parties, including the Labour Party, lack what it takes to lead Nigeria towards greatness.

Okonkwo stated, ‘I am committed, irreversibly, to a great Nigeria built on equity, justice, and fairness, where every citizen will be free and able to aspire to any position or level in life.’

He criticized the APC and PDP, claiming that their leadership has failed the country, leaving citizens feeling hopeless and pushing them towards protests for survival. He urged that a strong political party is essential to reclaim power from what he called ‘kakistocrats and kleptocrats’.

Additionally, Okonkwo emphasized the need for a decisive leader who can build a party of integrity from the grassroots. He pointed out that a corrupt party cannot produce good leaders, regardless of their intentions.

In reflecting on the journey to free Nigeria from corrupt leadership, Okonkwo expressed skepticism about the judiciary’s role in protecting democracy. He encouraged citizens to take charge of their destiny through their vote.

He shared his early belief in Obi’s potential to create a strong party but felt let down by Obi’s lack of direction. Okonkwo recalled being shocked when Obi expressed that he didn’t intend to build a strong Labour Party, leading Okonkwo to reassess his loyalty.

Now, Okonkwo feels that he cannot continue to support Obi when the leader’s position on vital issues is unclear. He believes that the current situation in the Labour Party has left many members confused about its future.

Despite his departure, Okonkwo stressed that his decision has nothing to do with joining either the APC or PDP. He remains dedicated to the aspirations of the Nigerian people for a better future.

Okonkwo concluded his announcement by calling for peace and wisdom from the government in managing protests, underscoring that good governance is crucial to prevent unrest.
