Pope Francis has authorized the canonization of 11 martyrs in Syria and recognized miracles attributed to Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Giuseppe Allamano. The decisions were made during an audience with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.

The recognition of a miracle attributed to Blessed Carlo Acutis, a young layman who passed away at the age of 15, is sure to resonate with young Catholics. The miracle involved a woman from Costa Rica, named Liliana, who prayed for her daughter Valeria following a serious accident. Valeria’s recovery, after prayers to Blessed Carlo, was seen as miraculous.

Pope Francis also approved the canonization of Blessed Giuseppe Allamano, who founded the Consolata Missionaries, along with Marie-Léonie Paradis and Elena Guerra. Another recognized miracle was attributed to Venerable Giovanni Merlini, an Italian priest.

The Pope recognized the martyrdom of Servant of God Stanislav Kostka Streich and Servant of God Mária Magdolna Bódi, who were killed in hatred of the faith by communists. Heroic virtues were attributed to Guglielmo Gattiani, Ismaele Molinero Novillo, and Ismaele Molinero Novillo.

Additionally, Pope Francis approved the canonization of Blessed Emanuele Ruiz and his companions, as well as lay faithful Francesco, Abdel Mooti, and Raffaele Massabki, who were killed in hatred of the faith in Damascus, Syria. The Consistory of Cardinals has been called to deliberation on these matters.
