Power Shutoff Planned Near Nine Mile Falls Amid Fire Risks
SPOKANE, Wash. — Avista Utilities announced on Thursday that it is likely to implement a public safety power shutoff near Nine Mile Falls due to severe fire risks. The shutoff is expected to occur around 4 p.m. today.
The utility company stated that nearly 1,200 customers could be affected by this measure aimed at preventing wildfire outbreaks. Avista is continuously monitoring the conditions in the area as it approaches the time for the shutoff.
The North Indian Trail, Nine Mile Falls, and Five Mile Prairie neighborhoods are specifically highlighted as areas of concern. Avista’s management has expressed the necessity for the shutoff due to unusually high fire risk stemming from gusty winds and dry weather conditions across central and eastern Washington.
In addition to the fire risks, the forecast suggests that smoke and air quality issues may worsen throughout the day. Avista urges residents in these neighborhoods to prepare for potential outages and follow safety guidelines as conditions continue to evolve.
As of now, Avista is maintaining its assessment process and will update customers on any changes as they monitor the situation.
