U.k. Prime Minister Announces Crackdown On Protest Amid Gaza Conflict

In a notable address during a meeting with regional police chiefs, Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, expressed concerns about the recent surge in protest activities, referring to it as a shift towards ‘mob rule’ that threatens democratic principles in Britain.

Against the backdrop of escalating tensions following the Gaza conflict ignited by Hamas attacks on October 7, Sunak’s remarks underscore a growing unease within the Conservative Party, urging a firmer stance against protests.

Reports of pro-Palestinian demonstrations outside the residences of Members of Parliament (MPs) have raised security fears and prompted a wave of disturbing threats, creating a fraught atmosphere.

Sunak, calling for decisive action, urged law enforcement authorities to utilize existing powers more assertively to curb protests perceived as crossing the line, while introducing a new set of guidelines known as the ‘Protest Protocol’ for enhanced enforcement.

Under this directive, demonstrations outside the homes of elected officials are deemed intimidatory and potentially disruptive to public discourse, warranting stringent restrictions to preserve the sanctity of democratic debate.

Amidst this discourse, human rights organization Amnesty International criticized Sunak’s rhetoric, cautioning against undermining the right to peaceful protest and urging a balanced approach to safeguard civil liberties in the U.K.
