Prince Harry Appeals Security Decision Amid Ongoing Family Tensions

London, England – Prince Harry arrived at the Royal Courts of Justice on Tuesday morning to contest a British government decision to downgrade his taxpayer-funded security during visits to the UK. This two-day hearing comes amid ongoing tensions with his family following his and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex‘s departure from royal duties in 2020.

Harry’s legal team is appealing a ruling by the Home Office, which decided the prince would not receive the same level of protection as working members of the Royal Family. The decision was made by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec) shortly after Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal responsibilities.

Despite no longer using the HRH title, Harry remains a member of the royal family, currently positioned fifth in line to the throne. The hearing is not expected to include testimony from the prince, and a written decision from the judges is anticipated in the following weeks.

He expressed fears for his family’s wellbeing, saying previously, ‘I cannot put my wife in danger like that and, given my experiences in life, I am reluctant to unnecessarily put myself in harm’s way too.’

Harry’s lawyers argued that the prince felt ‘singled out’ by Ravec’s decision. They contend that the committee should adhere to established protocols, which require in-depth risk assessments before altering security arrangements. Conversely, the government maintained that the committee should consider security on a case-by-case basis.

In 2023, Harry’s previous legal attempts to secure better protection were denied, with judges ruling that the government’s actions were lawful. However, the Court of Appeal agreed to hear Harry’s case after a fresh application from his legal team in June 2024.

On Tuesday, Prince Harry was seen arriving at the court, where he sat with his solicitor Jenny Afia and a security detail. The hearing is designed to explore the nuances of his security provisions, a matter that has strained his relationship with King Charles III, especially after their familial estrangement.
