Quaker Oats Expands Recall Of Cereal And Snack Products Due To Salmonella Concerns

The Quaker Oats Co. is expanding its recall of cereal and snack products due to concerns of potential contamination with salmonella bacteria. The company, owned by PepsiCo, has recalled over 60 products since December 2023. Many popular items, such as Quaker Chewy bars and Cap’n Crunch, are included in the recall.

The latest recall, announced on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, includes additional flavors of Cap’n Crunch and Oatmeal Squares cereals, various Chewy granola bars, Gatorade protein bars, and more. The affected products were sold across the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Saipan.

Consumers are advised to dispose of any recalled products and can visit the Quaker Oats website or contact the company’s consumer relations for reimbursement.

As of December 2023, no confirmed illnesses related to the recalled products have been reported by Quaker Oats. Salmonella is a common bacteria that causes foodborne illness, with symptoms including diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. While most people recover without treatment, certain groups such as young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe infections.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that salmonella causes over 1 million foodborne cases in the United States each year. They recommend avoiding consumption of pre-cut cantaloupe, unless from a different brand, as a separate salmonella outbreak has impacted over 300 cases and resulted in hospitalizations.

Quaker Oats has not provided further information regarding any reported illnesses in relation to the expanded recall. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It is crucial for consumers to be aware of the recall and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
