American Red Cross Blood Donation Campaign

WICHITA, Kan. — The American Red Cross is encouraging blood donations as spring arrives, aiming to replenish supplies that typically decline during the colder months. Anyone who donates blood in April will be automatically entered into a sweepstakes for a chance to win one of three $5,000 gift cards.

With blood having a shelf life of just 42 days, the Red Cross emphasized the importance of donating now, especially with severe weather season approaching. “Sometimes we have canceled drives, and people experience emergencies that prevent them from donating, leading to potential disruptions in the blood supply,” said Logan Wright, a regional spokesperson for the Red Cross. “If you can donate now, that would really help keep our blood supply stable for this upcoming storm season.”

April marks National Volunteer Month, a timely reminder for individuals to engage in acts of service through blood donation. The Red Cross reports that approximately 12,000 blood donations are needed daily to ensure hospitals have adequate resources to assist patients. Specific blood types, such as Type O, are particularly critical during this time due to increased demand.

<p“Blood drives depend on the generosity and valuable time of our volunteer donors,” Red Cross officials stated in a press release. “As spring activities ramp up, so does the need for donations.”

In addition to the chance at a $5,000 gift card, donors who give blood by the end of April will receive a Red Cross t-shirt while supplies last. Those who donate from May 1 to May 18 will receive a $20 gift card for a chosen retailer and an entry into a grand prize drawing for a trip for two anywhere in the U.S.

According to Red Cross data, severe weather has already led to the cancellation of over 1,000 blood drives nationwide, resulting in an estimated shortfall of 30,000 blood donations. This situation has heightened the urgency of the appeal for donations, as the Red Cross provides about 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply.

Individuals interested in donating blood can schedule appointments using the Red Cross Blood Donor App or by visiting redcross.org/Give-Blood. For those unable to schedule an immediate appointment, the organization encourages them to book a later date.

“Every drop you give could mean a parent holding their child again or someone in the community getting a second chance at life,” added Wright. “We encourage everyone who can to join this vital mission.”
