José De León Red Sox Pitching

BOSTON, Massachusetts – The Boston Red Sox have promoted right-handed pitcher José De León from Triple-A Worcester ahead of their final game of the 2025 regular season. De León’s call-up comes as the team prepares to face the Detroit Tigers at 3:05 p.m. ET on Sunday at Fenway Park.

This move follows the decision to demote Chris Murphy, who had been a reliable option out of the bullpen. Murphy threw three scoreless innings in Saturday’s loss to the Tigers, finishing the season with a 3.12 ERA.

“Veteran righty José De León called up to the Red Sox. He could pitch today,” reported MLB insider Chris Cotillo. The Red Sox are already set for the playoffs and are looking to manage their pitching staff heading into the postseason.

De León, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since the 2023 season, has spent time with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Tampa Bay Rays, Cincinnati Reds, and Minnesota Twins in his six-year career. While he posted a 6.93 ERA in 22 games with Worcester this year, the team hopes his experience can help them secure a victory on Sunday.

Boston’s final game is crucial, as they are expected to face either the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, or Cleveland Guardians in the upcoming playoffs. “At this point, it’s more important to get through Sunday’s game healthy than anything else,” Cotillo added. “Adding a guy like De León, with plenty of experience, could help the team stay fresh.”

The Red Sox are looking to bolster their playoff roster and add depth to their pitching lineup as they prepare for the postseason.
