Reddit Faces Major Outage Affecting Thousands of Users

Fargo, ND, USA — More than 35,000 users reported issues with Reddit on Thursday afternoon, marking a significant outage for the popular social media platform. According to DownDetector.com, a website that tracks service interruptions, the surge in reports began around 2:40 p.m. EDT, peaking at approximately 35,044 user complaints by 3:15 p.m. EDT.
Data from DownDetector indicated that the majority of the reported problems, 47%, were associated with the Reddit app, while 42% were linked to issues on the website. Only 11% of the outage complaints were related to server connection problems.
In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, the Reddit Status account acknowledged the ongoing issues, stating it was “currently investigating this issue.” By 3:48 p.m. EDT, the account reported that a fix had been implemented and that the team was “monitoring the results.” Despite the attempted resolution, nearly 28,000 users were still experiencing difficulties around 3:45 p.m. EDT.
Reddit did not respond immediately to requests for comments from Forbes regarding the incident. This story is still developing and updates will be provided as information becomes available.
Earlier this year, Reddit had experienced slight usage issues, but nothing on the scale of Thursday’s outage. Last November, the platform encountered two major outages in less than 24 hours, attributing one incident to “a bug in a recent update.” The first outage affected over 47,000 users, and the following day, DownDetector reported more than 76,000 users experiencing similar issues.
In a humorous attempt to address user concerns during last year’s outages, Reddit tweeted a meme that simply stated, “sorry sorry sorry.”
This outage occurred in close proximity to issues faced by Meta’s platforms, Facebook and Instagram, where thousands of users also reported problems just days prior, highlighting ongoing reliability challenges among major social media networks.
