Bob Barnett Lawyer American Politics

Washington, D.C. – Bob Barnett, a prominent lawyer known for representing major American political figures, has died at age 79. His wife, Rita Braver, a journalist for CBS, confirmed the news to CNN, stating, “He was the greatest husband ever.”

Barnett built a long and distinguished career in the nation’s capital, representing clients from both the Democratic and Republican parties. His clients included notable politicians such as Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, and Sarah Palin.

Described as “Washington’s consummate insider” by Politico, Barnett’s experience spanned more than four decades. He worked extensively on 10 national presidential campaigns, often stepping in to prepare candidates for debates by playing the role of their opponents.

Examples of his unique preparation roles included portraying George H.W. Bush for Hillary Clinton’s 1984 campaign and Bill Clinton during the 1992 primaries. He later helped prepare Barack Obama after he secured the Democratic nomination in 2008.

Barnett was not only influential in political circles but also assisted established journalists like Bob Woodward with publishing deals. In his later career, he helped bridge the gap between the Clinton and Obama camps after their contentious primary battle in 2008.

Born in Illinois, Barnett received his law degree from the University of Chicago. He had been married to Rita Braver for 53 years. An official cause of death has not been disclosed.
