San Francisco Police Officer Car Accident

SAN FRANCISCO – A rookie officer with the San Francisco Police Department was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence after a crash that left five people injured, one critically. The incident occurred just before 2 a.m. at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Rivera Street.

According to a police statement, officers were dispatched to the scene after reports of a collision. They discovered a minivan crashed against a concrete light pole and a heavily damaged sedan nearby. Three occupants of the minivan were hospitalized, one in critical condition, while the two people in the sedan sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the sedan, identified as 28-year-old Ryan Kwong, was determined to be driving under the influence. He was promptly arrested and booked into jail on charges including DUI causing injury and reckless driving. Jail records show he was booked just before 8:20 a.m. Saturday.

Kwong, who had just started a 16-week field-training program, was recently sworn in by Chief Bill Scott. The chief expressed his condolences for the victims, stating, “This incident was incredibly tragic, and my heart goes out to the injured victims.”

Mayor Daniel Lurie and San Francisco Police Officers Association President Tracy McCray also made statements regarding the incident. McCray emphasized that there is “no excuse for drunk driving, especially for police officers,” and called for full accountability if the allegations against Kwong are confirmed.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with information to contact them at 415-575-4444.
