San Francisco Fleet Week has commenced, bringing an array of maritime and air events to residents of the Bay Area. The annual tradition, described by organizers as a “time-honored sea service celebration,” offers a rare opportunity for the public to observe the capabilities of today’s maritime forces firsthand.

This year’s Fleet Week, scheduled from October 7 to October 14, will see the participation of approximately 2,500 sailors, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen. These personnel are expected to arrive in San Francisco aboard various military units, ships, and squadrons, providing residents the chance to engage with service members and learn more about their roles.

A highlight of the event is the airshow featuring the Blue Angels, known for their precision aerobatics. The display will also include performances by a United Airlines 777 and the U.S. Navy Leap Frogs Parachute Team, among others. Spectators are encouraged to view the airshow from strategic locations between the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz.

The fleet’s arrival will be marked by a water parade, with ships escorted by a San Francisco Fire Department boat. Additionally, several ships will be available for public tours, allowing visitors to explore the inner workings of U.S. Navy and Coast Guard vessels. Among the vessels open for tours are the USS Somerset (LPD 25), USS Tripoli (LHA 7), and the Royal Canadian Navy Frigate HMCS Regina (FFH 334).

In addition to the air and sea displays, Fleet Week will feature several musical performances. The U.S. Marine Corps 1st Marine Division Band will headline the Honor Our Fallen Concert, a tribute to service members who have sacrificed their lives. Furthermore, Navy and Marine Corps bands will be performing free concerts at various locations across San Francisco.

Organizers emphasize that Fleet Week serves to foster understanding between the public and the armed forces, highlighting how maritime services contribute to national defense and the protection of the seas.
