Scarlett Johansson Set to Star in New Exorcist Film
LOS ANGELES, CA — Scarlett Johansson is confirmed to star in the upcoming film from the iconic Exorcist franchise, marking a significant shift in the series’ direction. The actress, a two-time Oscar nominee, will take the lead in this latest installment, which is set to begin filming in New York City.
Mike Flanagan, known for his work on ‘The Haunting of Hill House,’ will write and direct the project under his Red Room Pictures banner. In a statement, Flanagan expressed excitement for Johansson’s involvement, stating, “Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters. I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film.”
Johansson’s casting comes after the franchise’s last film, ‘The Exorcist: Believer,’ which grossed only $65.5 million domestically and $136.2 million worldwide. This followed Universal and Blumhouse paying $400 million for the rights to the franchise, originally anticipated to undergo a trilogy directed by David Gordon Green. However, after the underperformance of ‘Believer,’ Green withdrew from the project further solidifying the need for a fresh approach.
The new installment will present an original story set within the Exorcist universe but will not be a sequel or a remake. Producers include Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek Entertainment, and Flanagan, who will also executive produce alongside Alexandra Magistro and others. Jason Blum and Ryan Turek will serve as producer and executive producer for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.
Johansson’s recent box office success with ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth,’ which earned nearly $869 million worldwide, indicates strong commercial viability for this film. This role also marks Johansson’s entry into the horror genre, an exciting venture for the accomplished actress, who has previously won numerous awards, including a Tony and a BAFTA.
As anticipation builds, the film aims to inject new life into a beloved yet challenged franchise, promising to explore fresh narratives in horror cinema. Further details regarding the film’s storyline and additional casting are expected to be revealed soon.
