Baltimore Weather Storm

BALTIMORE, Maryland — The Baltimore region is bracing for severe weather as strong wind gusts and rain are expected throughout Sunday. The storm, being described as a significant nor’easter, will deliver widespread precipitation beginning in the afternoon and continuing overnight into Monday.

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) has announced that it is proactively preparing for this weather event. This includes clearing storm drains, organizing tree contractors, and getting emergency equipment ready. Residents are advised to stay off the roads when possible, especially to avoid flooded areas and downed power lines.

“Be cautious of fallen trees or tree limbs, and treat intersections with non-functional signals as four-way stops,” the SHA stated.

While the rain affecting Baltimore is not linked to Tropical Storm Jerry, which is currently traversing the Caribbean, it may still contribute to dangerous rip currents along Maryland’s beaches. The National Hurricane Center has indicated that there is no immediate threat from the storm.

Forecasters predict that the Baltimore area could receive between 1 to 2 inches of rain, with localized heavier amounts further east. Wind gusts are expected to escalate, potentially exceeding 40 mph in central Maryland and up to 50 mph along the coast. Coastal flooding is a major concern as high winds and persistent rains impact the tides.

National Weather Service warnings have already been issued. As the storm develops offshore, gusty winds will affect mariners in the Chesapeake Bay area, creating dangerous conditions. Mariners are urged to prepare for gale-force gusts and waves reaching heights of 3 to 6 feet.

In addition to the rain, limited sunshine is expected early next week as the storm recedes. However, cooler temperatures will prevail, with highs in the 60s next week.

As the community prepares for this significant weather event, Baltimore Gas and Electric has reminded customers to report outages immediately through various channels, including their website and mobile app. Customers are also urged not to approach fallen power lines.

Ultimately, while Sunday will bring challenges in the form of rain and wind, agencies are ready to respond to the situation as it unfolds.
