OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the star point guard for the Oklahoma City Thunder, has been named Sports Illustrated‘s Sportsperson of the Year for 2025, a testament to his remarkable achievements on and off the court.

The 27-year-old led the Thunder to their first NBA championship since relocating to Oklahoma City and earned accolades as both the NBA’s scoring leader and the Most Valuable Player (MVP). Gilgeous-Alexander was also named Finals MVP following a stellar playoff performance.

“It’s a complete honor,” said Gilgeous-Alexander. “Obviously, the list of individuals that have won it before have achieved amazing things in their respective fields.” Previous recipients include sports legends like Sugar Ray Leonard and Serena Williams.

Gilgeous-Alexander is currently having an outstanding season, with averages of 32 points per game on an impressive shooting percentage of 56%. As the Thunder pursue another successful postseason, they hold the best record in the NBA at 29–5, showcasing Gilgeous-Alexander’s pivotal role in the team’s success.

This recognition reflects his commitment to sportsmanship and integrity, values instilled in him by his mother, Charmaine. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high character and leading by example both on the court and in the community.
