Zelensky Meets Trump Amid Claims of Drone Attack on Putin
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday to discuss a peace agreement aimed at ending the nearly four-year war sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Following the meeting, Trump expressed optimism that a resolution was closer than ever. He noted his willingness to visit Ukraine to advocate for territorial concessions. However, the mood shifted when Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of launching drones to target his residence, a claim that both Zelensky and U.S. officials vehemently denied.
“This alleged ‘residence strike’ story is a complete fabrication,” Zelensky posted on social media. In support of his claim, U.S. national-security officials also stated that no evidence supported Moscow’s assertion of an attempted attack on Putin.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that the Russian response would be “more rigid” in negotiations due to what they termed reckless Ukrainian actions. Meanwhile, Zelensky emphasized the need for pressure on Russia to support meaningful dialogue and avert further violence.
In the days leading up to this meeting, Russia intensified attacks on Ukrainian cities, including a drone strike that led to civilian casualties in Sloviansk. Zelensky had also been in contact with other allies prior to meeting Trump, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to discuss the ongoing conflict.
During the meeting, Zelensky and Trump discussed the importance of strong support for Ukraine while speculation about territorial concessions loomed over the negotiations. Trump suggested that he had spoken with Putin beforehand, framing the discussions as crucial for moving toward peace.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also condemned Russia’s claims, stating they serve as a pretext for continued attacks on Ukraine. Experts explained that these assertions may reflect Moscow’s interests in prolonging the conflict, undermining efforts for peace.
Despite the deteriorating situation, Zionist leaders expressed their commitment to do whatever it takes to end the conflict. Zelensky affirmed that the negotiations must continue, warning that Russia’s actions would only further complicate peace efforts.
