Sigma Unveils Compact BF Camera with Innovative Features

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Sigma has announced the launch of the BF, a compact 24.6-megapixel full-frame interchangeable lens camera, aiming to ‘evoke the essence of photography’ with a streamlined design that features only three buttons, a dial, and a shutter release. The BF measures 5.1 by 2.9 by 1.4 inches and weighs 13.7 ounces, making it lightweight and easy to handle.
The new L-mount Sigma BF is designed to allow photographers to focus on the joy of photography by minimizing distractions. According to Sigma, the camera’s simple, clear, and innovative user interface deviates significantly from traditional modern cameras. Key photography settings are conveniently displayed on the live view screen, while secondary settings can be accessed via an optional menu.
“Photographers can easily adjust essential parameters like shutter speed, aperture, ISO sensitivity, and more with the touch of a finger,” a Sigma spokesperson stated. The camera also boasts haptic feedback technology in its dials and buttons, ensuring comfortable and accurate interaction.
The BF’s rear display, with a resolution of approximately 2.1 million dots, is designed to present only the most necessary information. Sigma has also implemented a secondary status monitor to keep the live view screen uncluttered, allowing photographers to concentrate on their subject.
This camera features a ‘true unibody’ design, a first in camera history, being carved from a single block of aluminum, a process taking seven hours. Sigma promises this construction provides unprecedented durability while offering a harmonious weight when combined with any lens.
Included with the BF is a built-in 230GB SSD, capable of storing over 14,000 JPEG files and 4,300 uncompressed RAW images or 150 minutes of high-quality video. It employs a USB-C connection for easy offloading to computers.
The 24.6-megapixel sensor offers a native ISO range from 100 to 102,400, expandable to lower settings of 6, 12, 25, and 50. The camera also features a hybrid autofocus system that combines phase and contrast detection with advanced algorithms for quick and precise subject targeting.
The Sigma BF is capable of capturing video at 6K resolution and supports L-Log formats in both H.264 and H.265 at speeds up to 29.97 fps. Full HD video can be recorded at up to 119.88 fps, making it versatile for various filming scenarios.
Creative options are abundant with the BF, which includes 13 different color modes, such as Standard, Rich, Calm, and others, enabling photographers to explore new creative avenues.
The Sigma BF will be available in black or silver, with a retail price of $1,999. It is scheduled to ship by April 2025.
In conjunction with the BF launch, Sigma is updating its I Series of compact prime lenses, introducing a new silver color option to complement the camera’s design. The company also announced enhancements to the 45mm f/2.8 DG lens, now including support for a magnetic metal lens cap. However, the optical performance remains the same, with these changes implemented for L-mount lenses in April and for E-mount starting in May.
