Snl Elon Musk Cold Open Sketch

NEW YORK, New York — In a biting satirical cold open on March 1, 2025, “Saturday Night Live” revisited the high-profile tensions from Donald Trump‘s recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The sketch kicked off a night filled with comedy and celebrity appearances, featuring popular cast members and special guests.

James Austin Johnson reprised his role as Donald Trump, alongside Bowen Yang as Vice President JD Vance and Mikey Day playing Zelenskyy. The opening sketch presented a humorous take on a newsworthy exchange that quickly devolved into a shouting match, interspersed with ridiculous claims and banter reflecting Trump’s characteristic style.

The sketch began with a voiceover setting the stage: “Yesterday, President Trump hosted Ukrainian President Zelenskyy at the White House, and it went really, really well. Everyone who watched felt at ease and thought the world was now a safer place. Here now is a replay of their historic press conference.”

“Trump” opened the sketch with a statement, “It is I, president and CEO of Gaza Hotel and Casino, Donald Trump, and I’d like to welcome President Zelenskyy here to this incredible trap. It’s going to be a big, beautiful trap, and we’re going to attack him very soon for no reason, right?”

Moments later, “Vance” interrupted, criticizing Zelenskyy’s attire, saying, “You didn’t say thank you. You didn’t say anything about us being handsome.” The humor escalated with exaggerated remarks about clothing and personal insults, reminiscent of their real-life meeting that strained international relations.

In an amusing twist, Mike Myers made a surprise appearance as Elon Musk, entering dramatically and sporting casual wear. His portrayal aimed to parody Musk’s real-life antics, such as mass firings. “Thanks, Donald, what are you doing in my office? You know, I’m the president now, right? I’m kidding.”

Myers’s “Musk” discussed government changes light-heartedly, saying, “They’re firing the non-essential employees, like air traffic controllers.” The sketch maintained its comedic edge, contrasting serious political themes with outrageous humor.

“Trump” humorously remarked, “Some of the planes are going to land upside down, but then the luggage falls right into your lap and you’re ready to go.” The tone emphasized the blend of satire and absurdity, characteristic of “SNL” but also relevant to current events.

The sketch culminated with Trump referencing another headline from the week, the delayed “Epstein Files” release, leading to witty one-liners that continued the outrageous tone of the performance. “You’re not even wearing a suit. It’s disrespectful. Who shows up to the White House in a T-shirt and jeans like a garbage person?”

Returning to his emotional roots, Myers reflected on his past experiences with the show, sharing that he was both nervous and excited to join the cast after years away. “It’s a thrill to be back here,” he stated, emphasizing nostalgia and love for the show in his remarks.

In previewing the night’s show, which coincided with his guest hosting, previous “SNL” cast member Shane Gillis also humorously referenced his controversial exit from the cast in 2019, assuring viewers, “Don’t Google that,” solidifying his comedic style’s mix of reflection and self-deprecation.

The episode marked a strong return for the sketch show, which gained heightened viewership numbers leading up to its return to original programming following a hiatus. The cold open drew widespread applause, re-energizing its audience and enhancing its relevance in light of recent political events.
