Snowstorm Inspires New Life: Big Bear Eagles Welcome Third Eaglet

BIG BEAR, Calif. — A winter storm enveloped Southern California overnight, blanketing the mountains in snow and creating a picturesque yet challenging environment for Jackie and Shadow, a pair of bald eagles nesting in Big Bear. As the storm raged on, their third eaglet hatched on March 8, 2025, completing a family of three chicks.
Amid swirling snowflakes, Jackie exhibited unwavering commitment, spending hours in the nest to keep her eaglets warm and safe. The adverse weather added complexities to the parenting process, but Jackie’s dedication ensured the chicks received necessary protection from the elements.
The snowstorm arrived just as the third eaglet made its entrance to the world, joining two siblings hatched on March 3 and shortly before its own birth. As the family adjusted to their new dynamic, Jackie and Shadow’s nurturing instincts kicked into high gear.
“Despite the snow and cold, Jackie stayed in the nest for hours to keep the chicks warm and safe,” a spokesperson from Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) said. “It was truly a testament to the bond between the parents and their eaglets.”
The couple has been diligent in feeding their eaglets, providing sustenance 12 times on March 12, a feat typical for the chicks at this developmental stage. “We may observe some sibling rivalry, which can occur as eaglets establish feeding order,” FOBBV noted. “More dominant eaglets tend to eat first, while smaller ones wait or find other creative ways to get fed.”
As the eaglets grow more robust, their developing vision and coordination offer glimpses of their strength amidst the snowy landscape. Jackie and Shadow’s hard work remains crucial as they prepare their offspring for future challenges.
With the immediate danger of the storm passing, Jackie and Shadow continue to thrive as parents, focused on the future of their family. FOBBV plans to announce a public naming solicitation for the trio of eaglets soon, inviting excitement from eagle enthusiasts.
