Son Of Former Australian Defence Minister Dies In Parachuting Incident

Lance Corporal Jack Fitzgibbon, the son of former Australian Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon, tragically passed away following a parachuting incident during a routine training exercise at the RAAF Base in Richmond near Sydney.

The incident, which occurred last night, has shocked the Australian Defence Force community and the nation. Acting Special Operations Commander Brigadier James Kidd expressed deep sadness over the loss of Lance Corporal Fitzgibbon, describing him as a highly respected and beloved soldier.

The soldier was a member of the 2nd Commando Regiment, specialized in special operations within the Army. All parachute training activities have been paused as an investigation into the incident has been launched by the ADF.

Former Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon, in a statement read by Kidd, expressed pride in his son’s service and dedication to the ADF. Fitzgibbon’s dream job was serving in the special forces, and his father found solace in knowing that Jack died in service to his nation.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Defence Minister Richard Marles extended their condolences to the Fitzgibbon family and acknowledged the sacrifice made by Jack for his country. Opposition leader Peter Dutton, along with Coalition representatives, also paid tribute to the young soldier’s character and service.

Lance Corporal Fitzgibbon, an experienced parachutist who had served both domestically and internationally, was rendered first aid at the scene before being transferred to Westmead Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
