Sony Unveils PlayStation 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Consoles
Sony has announced the release of a limited edition PlayStation 5 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the iconic original PlayStation console. The new PS5 and PS5 Pro models will exhibit a nostalgic design, reminiscent of the original PlayStation with its distinctive all-grey color scheme. Sony plans to release only 12,300 units of the Anniversary Edition PS5 Pros, making them a rare collectible for gaming enthusiasts.
The special edition console not only comes with a retro aesthetic but is also adorned with a unique 30th-anniversary logo, cleverly integrated into the familiar PlayStation symbols. Hideaki Nishino, CEO of the Platform Business Group at Sony Interactive Entertainment, stated in a product introduction video, “We knew that in 2024 to celebrate this 30th anniversary milestone we had to create something that honored the history and joy that PlayStation has brought us all since the 90s.”
Accompanying the console’s launch are specially themed DualSense and DualSense Edge wireless controllers, both donning the classic grey and featuring detailed grip textures inspired by the 30th Anniversary Logo. Aside from the new design aspects, the hardware specifications of these special edition consoles remain consistent with the regular PS5 models.
Additionally, PlayStation enthusiasts will have the chance to purchase a limited edition version of the PlayStation Portal handheld console, rounding out the nostalgic offerings with a matching retro color scheme. The full suite of these collectibles aligns with Sony’s homage to the original PlayStation, celebrating its release on December 3, 1994.
Gamers and collectors have expressed their excitement online, with one user writing, “This hits so hard in my nostalgia gut. As a console collector, I need this.” The celebratory initiative by Sony serves as a reminder of the longstanding tradition and evolution of the PlayStation brand, evoking fond memories among fans.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding these new releases, Sony has not yet disclosed pricing information. However, experts suggest that due to the limited nature and additional accessories included, the price for these items could be significantly higher than standard models. Pre-orders will open officially on September 26 through PlayStation Network and participating retailers, with product availability expected on November 21.
While the nostalgic design aims to tap into the emotions of long-time gamers, the limited availability may drive up demand, likely leading to increased resale values. The release is part of Sony’s strategy to maintain its high-end gaming market presence, as analysts observe an inclination towards targeting dedicated gamers willing to invest in premium performance hardware.
