Sophia Loren Celebrates 90th Birthday with Glamour and Nostalgia
Celebrated Italian actress Sophia Loren marked her 90th birthday in Rome with a private party attended by 150 friends, colleagues, and family members. The event took place in a luxury hotel in the Italian capital, overlooking the historic Baths of Diocletian. Noted for her illustrious career spanning several decades, Loren remains one of the last surviving actresses from Hollywood’s Golden Age.
Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera reported that Loren’s birthday celebrations included an homage organized by the Cinecittà studios and Italy‘s minister of culture. The festivities also featured the inauguration of a suite named after her, with Loren dressed by her longtime friend and renowned couturier Giorgio Armani.
Loren’s birthday coincides with French actress Brigitte Bardot, who is also turning 90 on September 28. La Repubblica paid tribute to the two stars, acknowledging their influence on redefining the feminine imagination of the 20th century. “Splendid ninety-year-olds,” the paper remarked, highlighting their lasting impact on global cinema.
Loren’s career saw her star alongside some of the greatest actors of her time, including Cary Grant, Marlon Brando, and Frank Sinatra. Her collaborations with Italian co-star Marcello Mastroianni were particularly notable, with films such as “Marriage Italian Style” being celebrated in retrospectives at the Lincoln Center in New York City, as reported by Italy’s public broadcaster Rai.
Widowed since 2007, following the death of her husband and producer Carlo Ponti, Loren made a notable comeback on Italian television in 2010, portraying her own mother in a film about her life. Continuing her career well into her later years, her last film appearance was in 2020’s “The Life Ahead,” directed by her son, Edoardo Ponti.
