SpaceX Offers Free Starlink Terminals to Wildfire-Hit Los Angeles Areas
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that the company will provide free Starlink internet terminals to areas in Los Angeles devastated by recent wildfires. The announcement came after a reporter credited Starlink with enabling communication in fire-affected zones where traditional cell service had failed. Musk shared the news on his social media platform X, stating that the terminals would be deployed to assist impacted communities.
The wildfires, which have ravaged parts of California, have left a trail of destruction, including the loss of homes and lives. According to Fox 11 News, Starlink was the only means of communication for reporters covering the disaster. “The only reason we’re able to hear and communicate with you guys right now is because there’s absolutely no cell service at all in this whole area,” a reporter said during a broadcast.
Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., urged Musk to use his resources to help families affected by the fires. “Elon, I believe you want to help as much as I do. Can you use this platform and your money to help poorer families who lost their homes/workplaces?” Swalwell wrote in response to a video Musk shared showing the devastation.
Musk has criticized California’s regulations, claiming they hinder efforts to prevent wildfires. “These fires are easily avoidable, but nonsense regulations in California prevent action being taken, so year after year homes burn down and more people die,” Musk posted on X. He also argued that environmental regulations prevent the creation of fire breaks and brush clearing, which could mitigate the spread of fires.
SpaceX’s Starlink terminals have previously been deployed in disaster-stricken areas, including regions affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The terminals are designed to provide reliable internet access in emergencies, making them a critical tool for communication and coordination during crises.
As of now, the wildfires in Los Angeles have resulted in five deaths and significant property damage. A new fire has also been reported in the Hollywood Hills area. SpaceX’s initiative aims to provide immediate support to those affected, ensuring they can stay connected during this challenging time.
