Suspect Arrested in Alleged Attempt on Former President Trump’s Life
The alleged gunman who authorities claim targeted former President Trump while he was golfing in Florida on Sunday afternoon has been identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, aged 58. Law enforcement sources assert that Routh has a history of political posts on social media, frequently opposing Trump and advocating for Democratic causes. Routh has a recorded criminal history stemming from North Carolina.
On a post dated April 22, Routh echoed political rhetoric commonly heard in campaigns by public figures including President Biden and Vice President Harris, declaring “Democracy is on the ballot and we cannot lose.” His social media activity has also shown his support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia and Taiwan’s opposition to China.
The incident occurred at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. Secret Service identified Routh near the perimeter of the course carrying an AK-style rifle. Security personnel engaged Routh, prompting him to flee the scene. He was later caught by local police on nearby I-95, reportedly unarmed at the time of arrest.
Reports suggest that Routh has been active in efforts related to the ongoing war in Ukraine. He allegedly engaged with media about attempts to recruit soldiers for the conflict and has spent time aiding humanitarian efforts through a private organization, the International Volunteer Center.
Despite previous encounters with the law, including a 2002 conviction for possessing a weapon of mass destruction, details about Routh’s motives in the current situation remain unspecified by officials. Prosecutors in Palm Beach County are preparing to file charges at the state level, though federal charges may also be pursued, according to State Attorney Dave Aronberg.
Former President Trump, who was approximately 500 yards from the alleged gunman at the time of the incident, communicated to supporters via email that he was safe and unharmed. He reassured that this incident would not deter his activities.
