Orem, Utah — Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed on Sunday that Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old suspect in the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, is not cooperating with investigators.

During an interview with ABC News, Cox stated, “He has not confessed to authorities. He is not cooperating, but all the people around him are cooperating.” The governor emphasized the importance of cooperation from those close to Robinson as the investigation continues.

Kirk was shot and killed on September 10 during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University, part of the American Comeback Tour organized by his group, Turning Point USA. Authorities arrested Robinson about 33 hours after the incident.

Cox mentioned that Robinson joked about the shooting in online Discord chats, stating, “Those conversations definitely were happening, and they did not believe it was actually him.” Investigators are reviewing chat messages from individuals who apparently speculated about Robinson’s involvement.

The governor noted that a Discord spokesperson stated they identified an account linked to the suspect but found no evidence of a planned attack through their platform. “These were communications between the suspect’s roommate and a friend after the shooting,” the spokesperson said.

Cox also commented on Robinson’s social circle, including his roommate, who is allegedly transitioning from male to female and has been cooperative in the investigation. The roommate reportedly did not have prior knowledge of Robinson’s alleged actions.

In response to inquiries about Robinson’s ideological beliefs, Cox clarified that information regarding his views has come from acquaintances and family members. He said more evidence would emerge as formal charges are filed. “There will be much, much more information revealed in the coming days,” Cox added.

Kirk’s widow, Erika, expressed gratitude to first responders and expressed her resolve to ensure her husband’s voice continues to be heard. A memorial service is scheduled for September 21 at State Farm Stadium in Arizona.

Cox described the shooting as a significant event that reflects deeper issues within society. He urged Americans to promote kindness amidst political tensions, saying, “These are very tragic circumstances that impact all of us.”

Robinson remains in custody at Utah County Jail and is expected to face charges this week, including aggravated murder.
