Suspended CEO of Tembisa Hospital Passes Away Following Controversy
The Gauteng Department of Health has conveyed its condolences following the passing of Dr Ashley Mthunzi, the Chief Executive Officer of Tembisa Hospital, who succumbed to a brief illness on Tuesday.
Aged 45, Dr Mthunzi had been under suspension after his involvement in the probe conducted by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU). The investigation centered on allegations of fraud, corruption, and maladministration within the hospital, particular in relation to the irregular awarding of tenders to over 200 service providers by the hospital’s supply chain management.
Whistle-blower Babita Deokaran had previously raised concerns about irregular tenders amounting to more than R850 million at Tembisa Hospital and later met a tragic end through an assassination.
Reacting to the news, Motalatale Modiba, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health, expressed deepest sympathies to Dr Mthunzi’s family, friends, and colleagues during this challenging period of mourning.
