Tampa Prepares for Safe, Chilly Gasparilla Pirate Fest 2025
TAMPA, Fla. — The 2025 Gasparilla Pirate Fest, set for Saturday, January 25, will bring thousands of pirates and revelers to Tampa for the annual celebration. With freezing temperatures expected, city leaders and law enforcement are working to ensure a safe and enjoyable event for all attendees.
The festivities will kick off with the Gasparilla Flotilla, led by the Jose Gasparilla II pirate ship, sailing from Hillsborough Bay to the Tampa Convention Center. There, Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla (YMKG) will demand the key to the city from Mayor Jane Castor, followed by the Parade of Pirates along Bayshore Boulevard.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister emphasized the importance of safety during the event. “We’re working closely with our law enforcement partners to ensure everyone can enjoy the celebration without incident,” Chronister said during an interview with ABC Action News. He urged attendees to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines.
Parking will be available at the Tampa Convention Center and downtown garages, with special event rates in effect. Officials recommend arriving early, as spaces are expected to fill quickly. The parade route, stretching 4.5 miles, will feature 140 units, including floats, marching bands, and the YMKG pirates.
Free to the public, the event will also include live entertainment at stages along the Riverwalk, including Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and MacDill Park. Designated “wet zones” will allow adults of legal drinking age to consume alcohol responsibly along the parade route and at Curtis Hixon Park.
ABC Action News meteorologist Greg Dee warned attendees to prepare for chilly weather, with temperatures in the mid-30s and highs in the low 60s. “Layer up if you’re heading out,” Dee advised. “It will feel especially cold in the shade and during the late afternoon.”
The parade will begin at Bay to Bay and Bayshore Boulevard, continuing through downtown Tampa before ending at Cass Street and Ashley Drive. Reserved seating is available for those seeking a more comfortable viewing experience.
For those relying on public transportation, the TECO Line Streetcar System and HART bus service will provide additional options. Maps and parking details are available on the City of Tampa’s website.
As Tampa prepares for its annual pirate invasion, officials are confident that the combination of safety measures and community spirit will make the 2025 Gasparilla Pirate Fest a memorable event for all.
