Connor Bedard Macklin Celebrini Nhl Matchup

San Jose, California — The anticipation builds as former No. 1 overall picks Connor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini prepare to face off Thursday evening at SAP Center when the Chicago Blackhawks visit the San Jose Sharks (10:30 p.m. ET; CHSN+, NBCSCA).

Both players, hailing from North Vancouver, British Columbia, have garnered significant attention in the NHL since being selected first in consecutive drafts. Bedard, taken first by the Blackhawks in 2023, is now a leader on his team with 52 points this season, including 17 goals and 35 assists. Celebrini, the top pick from the 2024 NHL Draft, has recorded 48 points (20 goals, 28 assists) in 54 games despite missing the first two games of the season due to a hip injury.

“It’s going to be great,” Celebrini said, reflecting on the significance of the match. “Both our franchises need a little bit of time to get there” in terms of rivalry, he added, acknowledging the need for both teams to improve their postseason prospects.

Bedard, who won the Calder Trophy last season after leading all rookies with 61 points, is aware of the expectations that come with being a top draft pick. “It’s cool to see our hometown do that but it’s a great place for people to grow up playing hockey,” he remarked.

This Thursday meeting marks the third clash this season between the Sharks and Blackhawks. Celebrini was sidelined for the earlier matchups, a 4-2 Chicago victory and a 3-2 San Jose win. His absence was felt as he recovered from a preseason injury that extended into the regular season.

“He’s a dynamic player,” Bedard said of Celebrini, who emerged as a promising rookie in the league. “Coming in as an 18-year-old is tough, so I’m glad to see his production and impact on games has been awesome. It’s fun to watch.”

Celebrini lauded Bedard’s abilities, recognizing his offensive skills and drive on the ice. “His playmaking is unbelievable. The way he sees the ice I think doesn’t get appreciated as much,” Celebrini added.

The two players have developed a mutual respect despite their competitive roles, having played against each other since childhood. Bedard praised Celebrini for his relentless energy and ability to create plays off the puck, qualities that he believes set him apart.

As the match approaches, both young stars see it as the beginning of a promising rivalry in the league. Celebrini expressed hopes that future matchups could come during more critical moments, particularly in the playoffs. “It’s going to be fun to go against him,” he noted.

The Blackhawks look to build on their recent form, while the Sharks seek to end a five-season playoff drought. This game represents an opportunity for both franchises to gauge their futures with such talented young players leading the way.
