George Stephanopoulos Treasury Secretary Interview

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A lively exchange erupted on ABC‘s This Week as Treasury Secretary Bessent faced host George Stephanopoulos in a heated discussion on Sunday.

The interview quickly escalated as both men interrupted each other while discussing the ongoing government shutdown. Stephanopoulos asked Bessent about President Trump‘s strategies to garner votes during the crisis.

“Is that the best way to end this shutdown right now? Is that what the administration position is?” Stephanopoulos inquired, setting the tone for a contentious dialogue.

Bessent initially began to answer, stating, “No, George, the best way to do it…,” but shifted focus to criticize Stephanopoulos’ political history instead. He referenced the host’s previous tenure advising President Bill Clinton and his book, All Too Human: A Political Education.

“Look, you were involved in a lot of these in the nineties,” Bessent claimed, accusing Stephanopoulos of labeling Republicans as “terrorists” during past shutdowns.

As Bessent attempted to connect the historical shutdowns with the current crisis, Stephanopoulos countered, “I can disagree with you about the history there, but we don’t need a history lesson right now.”

The exchange grew more chaotic with both men raising their voices. Stephanopoulos attempted to steer the conversation back to the shutdown, but Bessent interjected, “If you want, I’ve got all your quotes here, George.”

With tensions high, Stephanopoulos rebutted, “That’s a mischaracterization of history,” before asking again about the shutdown and the potential use of the filibuster.

Bessent avoided taking a firm stance on the filibuster, emphasizing instead, “The best way is for five Democratic senators to come across the aisle.”

The heated dialogue reflects the ongoing divisions in Washington, with Trump openly criticizing Stephanopoulos in the past, labeling him as part of “ABC fake news.”

Amidst the shouting and interruptions, the two seemed far from reaching any consensus on how to resolve the government crisis.
