Tesla Model Y Juniper 2024 China Launch

SHANGHAI, ChinaTesla has launched its redesigned Model Y, codenamed ‘Juniper,’ in China, featuring a longer range, updated design, improved interiors, and a quieter driving experience. The revamped electric vehicle, first introduced in 2019, is now available in two configurations: rear-wheel drive and long-range all-wheel drive, with the base model starting at just under $36,000.

The new Model Y boasts a more angular front end, resembling Tesla’s autonomous vehicle design, and includes upgrades such as a front-end camera, new wheels, and a refined suspension. Tesla claims the redesign improves efficiency, offering a range of approximately 450 miles per charge. The updated suspension and wheel package also contribute to a smoother and quieter ride.

Among the notable additions are a sunroof with a silver-plated coating, 16 speakers, and a steering-column-mounted turn signal stalk, which was absent in the previous model. The trunk capacity has also increased to 2,130 liters with the rear seats folded, about 100 liters more than before. The vehicle is equipped with Tesla’s latest AI-assisted driving hardware, with the full self-driving (FSD) system expected to debut in China later this year.

The Model Y, Tesla’s best-selling car globally in 2023, slipped to second place in China during the first 11 months of 2024, with the BYD Qin Plus sedan taking the lead. According to China EV DataTracker, Tesla sold 418,428 units in China during that period.

Meanwhile, comparisons have been drawn between Tesla’s Model Y and Xpeng‘s P7, with some suggesting Tesla’s redesign pays tribute to Xpeng’s design. Xpeng, which saw a 34% increase in vehicle deliveries in 2024, has emerged as a key competitor in China’s electric vehicle market. Tesla’s deliveries, however, dropped by 1% during the same period.

The redesigned Model Y is currently available on Tesla’s website in China and other Asia-Pacific markets, with deliveries set to begin in March. No official announcement has been made regarding its release in the U.S. and Europe.
