Texas Climbs to No.1 in AP Top 25 Rankings
The Texas Longhorns have ascended to the No. 1 position in the latest AP Top 25 College Football Poll, surpassing former leader Georgia by a narrow margin of 22 points. Texas received a total of 35 first-place votes, while Georgia collected 23. Ohio State, which had no scheduled game this weekend, was awarded the remaining five first-place votes, maintaining a strong presence in the rankings.
This marks a significant achievement for Texas, being ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll for the first time since October 2008 under the leadership of coach Mack Brown. In their historic performance over the decades, the Longhorns have reached the top spot a total of 45 times since the poll’s inception in 1940.
Georgia narrowly avoided an upset against Kentucky, managing only a 13-12 victory in Lexington. Texas, contrasting with the Bulldogs’ recent struggle, demonstrated offensive prowess in their victory over the Roadrunners. However, Texas faced its own challenge as quarterback Quinn Ewers left the game due to a strained abdomen, leaving his availability for the upcoming game against Louisiana-Monroe uncertain. This potential absence may open the door for Arch Manning, a highly celebrated redshirt freshman, to make his first career start.
Moreover, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) continues to showcase its dominance in the AP Poll with nine teams featured this week. Alongside Texas and Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Missouri, Oklahoma, LSU, and Texas A&M are all ranked, illustrating the strength and competitive nature of the conference.
A deeper look into the rankings reveals some key movements among teams. Kansas State has climbed to No. 13 following their victory over Arizona, who has dropped out of the rankings. Illinois and Texas A&M have entered the Top 25, replacing Arizona and Boston College, who both suffered defeats to higher-ranked teams this past week.
With Texas achieving a top spot, and several Big 12 teams just outside the top ten, the path to the Big 12 title is set to become even more intriguing. Upcoming matches like Utah visiting Oklahoma State may significantly influence the evolving dynamic within the conference.
