Thanksgiving 2024: Celebrations and Travel Chaos in the United States
As the United States celebrates Thanksgiving on November 28, 2024, the country is abuzz with festivities and travel activity. This traditional holiday, which dates back to 1621 when the Pilgrims held a harvest feast with Native American tribes, is a time for Americans to express gratitude for the year’s blessings and achievements.
This year, like many others, sees a significant surge in travel as people head to their homes and gathering places. Airports across the country are experiencing high volumes of traffic, with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and other travel authorities preparing for the increased demand. The holiday period is one of the busiest times for air travel in the U.S..
Beyond the hustle and bustle of travel, Thanksgiving is also a time for family gatherings and traditional meals. The centerpiece of most celebrations is a large feast, often featuring roasted turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. These gatherings are not limited to Earth, as astronauts on the International Space Station also celebrate Thanksgiving with special meals and festivities.
While Thanksgiving is primarily celebrated in the United States on the fourth Thursday of November, it is also observed in Canada, although on a different date. In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday of October.
