Tornado Strikes San Juan County, Utah, Destroying Homes and Power Infrastructure

BLANDING, Utah — A tornado struck San Juan County in southeastern Utah on Saturday afternoon, causing significant destruction to homes and infrastructure.
Videos shared with FOX 13 News captured a large tornado forming south of Blanding in the Cahone Mesa area. The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado was spotted around 1:12 p.m., approximately 22 miles southeast of Blanding.
Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren reported that between 15 to 20 homes were in the storm’s path, with three confirmed destroyed. Fortunately, he stated that there have been no reports of injuries.
The American Red Cross is assisting those in need of emergency shelter, providing 25 to 30 cots at Montezuma Creek Elementary School. Local community resources, including the Chapter House, are working to help displaced residents find hotel accommodations.
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the tornado also destroyed three trailers and a hay barn, and knocked down multiple power poles. Utility workers are currently on-site to restore power to the affected areas.
The tornado was reportedly moving northeast at 10 miles per hour and a Tornado Warning remains in effect for southeastern San Juan County until 5:45 p.m.
