WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump will meet with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Wednesday at the White House to discuss strategies for ending the war in Ukraine.

Rutte’s visit comes after a recent phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. During that conversation, Trump indicated he would not provide Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles. Rutte is in Washington to explore alternative solutions for peace in the region.

The White House announced that a planned summit involving Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has been canceled, intensifying the urgency of the discussions between Trump and Rutte.

Rutte expressed confidence in Trump’s capabilities, stating, “He’s the only one who can get this done.” The NATO leader emphasized that his meeting aims to align efforts to promote a lasting peace plan for Ukraine.

Amid these negotiations, Ukraine is facing escalating violence. A recent Russian drone attack in Kyiv killed at least six and injured 18 others, targeting key infrastructure to disrupt Ukraine’s power supply. In response, the Ukrainian military reported a successful strike on a Russian chemical plant critical to its wartime operations.

The outcome of the talks between Trump and Rutte could be pivotal for NATO’s ongoing support of Ukraine and efforts to negotiate a ceasefire with Russia.
