Donald Trump Swearing In Ambassador Sergio Gor

Washington, D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump is set to swear in ambassador-designate to New Delhi, Sergio Gor, in the Oval Office on Monday. The ceremony, scheduled for 3 p.m. EST, comes during a time of increasing unease among foreign policy experts regarding Trump’s unconventional approach to international relations.

Officials describe Gor’s oath-taking as an unusual event, as presidential involvement in such ceremonies is rare. Typically, the vice president administers the oaths at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building or the State Department. By personally swearing in Gor, many interpret this gesture as a reflection of their closeness rather than a signaling of the importance placed on the U.S.-India relationship.

Foreign policy specialists express concern that Trump’s policies have strained relations with allies, including India. “Trump has repeatedly mocked and criticized India’s trade practices while suggesting a stronger relationship with Pakistan and China,” said Raghuram Rajan, former governor of the Reserve Bank of India, at a recent event in Chicago. He elaborated on the implications for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, remarking that ongoing tariffs have undermined trust.

Meanwhile, Gor has already traveled to New Delhi as part of his preparations for the role. His task includes addressing the fallout of Trump’s previous actions that some in the diplomatic community have deemed reckless. Analysts such as Raymond Vickery and David Price argue that Trump’s transactional method has eroded fundamental trust developed over decades.

Despite talks of a forthcoming trade agreement, Rajan warns that the U.S. risks further alienating India. “These grievances linger in people’s memories, despite all the rhetoric about military alignment,” he stated.

In the days preceding the swearing-in, Trump also hosted Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former al Qaeda leader recently removed from a terrorism watchlist, signaling a potential shift in U.S. policy. Observers noted that this visit further complicates the narrative of America’s diplomatic priorities.

Foreign policy commentators like Max Boot have criticized Trump’s unorthodox approach, arguing that his unpredictable rhetoric leaves both scholars and leaders in disarray. With skepticism about Trump’s dedication to international alliances growing, experts fear the long-term consequences for U.S. credibility.
