Union Prepare for Regular Season Clash Against Red Bulls Without Key Players

CHESTER, Pa. — The Philadelphia Union will face the New York Red Bulls in a regular-season match Saturday after their recent showdown in the U.S. Open Cup, but the Union will be without centerback Jakob Glesnes due to suspension.
Glesnes is serving a suspension for yellow card accumulation, while midfielder Indiana Vassilev will not participate after sustaining a concussion during Wednesday’s game. Additionally, New York’s right back Kyle Duncan will also be unavailable due to a previous red card.
The match is significant as both teams prepare for their first league encounter following the Open Cup clash. Union manager Bradley Carnell remarked on the team’s performance and the need for a focus on recovery in light of the recent match’s physical demands.
“Everyone dug deep here; everyone played a role,” said Carnell. “We’ll get some of those guys who played limited minutes in on a training session as well, and then it’s just about recovery.”
Vassilev’s absence will create opportunities for players like Olwethu Makhanya, who previously scored the game-winning goal for the Union. Makhanya is expected to step up in the defensive role on Saturday, potentially partnering with Nathan Harriel.
The intensity of this rivalry is heightened as both teams strive for valuable points in the league standings. Philadelphia is currently pushing to maintain its position at the top of the Eastern Conference, aiming for the Supporters’ Shield.
Meanwhile, Red Bull’s lineup will also miss Duncan as they look to regain momentum after a shaky stretch in the league. The upcoming match holds crucial implications for both teams moving forward into the final stretch of the season as they look to solidify playoff aspirations.
The match is set for Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 7 PM ET at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, where crowds are expected to be lively as fans flock to support their teams.
