University of Georgia (UGA) wide receiver Colbie Young has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest on Tuesday morning. Young was charged with misdemeanor battery and assault on an unborn child. The arrest occurred at 4:18 a.m. by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. He was released later that day after posting a $2,500 bond for the assault charge.

Speaking at the SEC Coaches Teleconference, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart stated, “I got to speak to him this morning, he’s been suspended indefinitely until this legal matter is resolved. We can’t really comment any further on the specifics of it, but had a good meeting with him this morning. We’re committed to continuing to educate our players and do the best job we can of making sure they understand the serious nature of these incidents. It’s very unfortunate, but we want to be responsible in decision-making on and off the field.”

According to police reports, an ex-girlfriend of Young’s claimed they had a “heated argument” over their previous relationship. During the altercation, Young allegedly “grabbed her left arm near her bicep and tricep and physically pulled her out of his room.” The report further alleged that Young “picked her up and began to squeeze her torso and abdomen,” causing discomfort and physical markings on her body. The arresting officer cited “probable cause” due to visible injuries on the alleged victim.

Young’s attorney, Kim Stephens, responded to the allegations, saying, “Colbie Young was arrested last night after he asked his ex-girlfriend to leave his apartment. He did not make physical contact with her in any way that could ever be considered a crime. I expect Mr. Young to be fully exonerated once our investigation is complete and the truth revealed.”

Steven Drummond, representing UGA’s Athletic Association, mentioned, “This is a pending legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.”

Prior to his tenure at Georgia, Young transferred from the University of Miami, where he played as a junior college transfer from Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pennsylvania. In his first season with the Bulldogs, Young has played five games, achieving 11 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns. He joined the Georgia team after two seasons with Miami, amassing 939 total yards and 10 touchdowns over his time there.
