University Of Sydney Vice Chancellor Appointed As Chair Of Go8

The Group of Eight (Go8) Board has announced the appointment of Professor Mark Scott AO, the current Vice Chancellor of the University of Sydney, as its new Chair. This decision comes as the Go8 also reappoints its CEO, Vicki Thomson, for another five-year term.

Professor Scott, who previously served as the Go8 Deputy Chair starting from February 1, 2023, succeeds Professor Brian Schmidt AC, the former Vice Chancellor of ANU and a renowned astrophysicist who played a significant role in leading the Go8 during the Universities Accord process.

Vicki Thomson, the Go8 Chief Executive, expressed her confidence that Professor Scott’s appointment would ensure strong leadership continuity during a crucial period for the nation’s commitment to quality research and excellence in education.

Highlighting Professor Scott’s distinguished background, Thomson emphasized his successful leadership roles in large and complex institutions across various sectors, including public service, education, and media. His outstanding communication skills, teaching experience, and previous tenure as the Managing Director of the ABC, where he oversaw the organization’s digital transformation, further enhance his qualifications for this position.

Thomson also shared her excitement for the upcoming 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Group of Eight, acknowledging her privilege to have led the Go8 since 2015 and continue to do so following her reappointment. She highlighted the significance of this milestone and the opportunity it presents to increase public awareness about the impact of Go8 universities’ research on Australia’s future.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Professor Scott reaffirmed the crucial role of Go8 universities as research powerhouses in Australia. He emphasized the massive impact that their work has on society and expressed his commitment to better communicate the value of research investment to the Australian community. He also emphasized that throughout the coming year, efforts will be focused on showcasing the world-class research conducted by Go8 universities and how it makes a significant difference in people’s lives.

Thomson underscored the importance of acknowledging the remarkable achievements of Australian researchers in 2024, highlighting that investment in research has transformed and saved lives. She cited examples such as the development of the bionic ear for the deaf and advancements in cervical cancer prevention. She emphasized that the research-intensive universities associated with the Go8 are dedicated to finding intelligent solutions to everyday problems and are driven by the nation’s challenges, research opportunities, and the ability to enhance the lives of future generations.
