NEW YORK – Verizon announced today a significant advancement in satellite and terrestrial telecommunications convergence, aiming to enhance connectivity for its customers. The initiative includes partnerships with astronaut Buzz Aldrin and the original Verizon Test Man, Paul Marcarelli, to showcase the expanded capabilities of America’s largest network.

“Fifty-six years ago I was one of the select few that made it into Space and the first team to help America conquer the moon,” said Buzz Aldrin, General USAF, Doctor of Astronautics. “Back then, Space was the great unknown, and now we’ve never been closer to it. I can’t look up in the sky without seeing a satellite fly by. It’s remarkable to see how far the human race – and technology – has come.”

Paul Marcarelli, the Original Verizon Test Man, added, “It’s been 10 years since I last asked America ‘Can you hear me now?’ Back then dead zones were everywhere and it’s safe to say today they are only in the most remote places like the dark side of the moon. Verizon’s always been on a mission to give its customers the very best experience, anticipate their changing needs and drive innovation. Satellite is for sure the next frontier.”

Verizon’s network now covers more than 99% of where people live, work, and play, with satellite back-up enhancing reliability in areas where traditional cellular networks might not reach. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted AST Special Temporary Authority (STA) to test satellite connections with Verizon smartphones, enabling voice, full data, and video applications without specialized software or device updates.

Verizon utilizes nearly 300 satellite-based portable network assets to ensure connectivity in areas with limited infrastructure or during emergencies. These assets provide temporary network access for first responders and in regions where fiber cables are unavailable or compromised. Satellite connections also serve as backhaul for cell sites in remote areas, allowing for rapid deployment while more robust connections are being established.

In addition to these advancements, Verizon has partnered with Skylo to launch a commercial direct-to-device messaging service, ensuring customers can stay connected wherever they are. The company has also integrated its private 5G network with NVIDIA AI to deliver powerful, real-time AI services at the edge, further empowering customers through innovation.
