Verizon Launches First Satellite Texting for Android Devices in the US

NEW YORK, March 19, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Verizon has unveiled a significant expansion of its satellite texting capabilities, allowing customers in the United States to send messages via satellite to any customer device when outside the reach of terrestrial cellular networks. This feature is available on select Android devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S25 and Google Pixel 9 series, with upgrades starting today and completing within two weeks.
“We are committed to powering the lives of our customers. Verizon’s network is America’s largest and already covers 99% of the places where people live, work, and play. This expansion of satellite texting capabilities is a testament to our commitment to ensure customers stay connected wherever they are,” said Joe Russo, EVP & President of Global Network and Technology.
The integration of satellite technology marks a pivotal shift in how consumers will connect, as Verizon works to bridge the gap between terrestrial and satellite communications. Joe Russo emphasized the importance of innovation, stating, “We know our customers expect more and we continue to innovate for them.”
Verizon’s move is part of an ongoing strategy to enhance its service offerings, further solidifying its position in the telecommunications market. The company is not only enabling basic satellite-to-cellular messaging, but also exploring advanced satellite services, including data transfers and video calling capabilities. This development follows successful trials conducted earlier this year.
In addition to personal messaging, Verizon is leveraging satellite technology to provide reliable services during emergency situations, using satellite-linked portable assets. The company also implements satellite connections to support temporary backhaul for new cell sites across various industries. With a revenue of $134.8 billion in 2024, Verizon continues to demonstrate strong financial performance while expanding its technological reach.
Verizon Communications Inc. was quick to acknowledge that this new service positions it as a leader in connectivity innovation. The recent enhancements are anticipated to drive growth and increase customer satisfaction amid an increasingly competitive market. The launch of satellite texting is viewed as a foundational step in evolving Verizon’s service offerings and enhancing user experience, particularly for those operating in areas lacking conventional cellular coverage.
