Mexicali, Mexico — A month has passed since the U.S. Department of State revoked the visas of Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila and her husband, Carlos Torres Torres. This situation has significantly affected local politics, creating tensions despite the couple’s separation.

The couple’s last public appearance was in September. Since then, Torres’ role has diminished, even though he previously played a crucial part in the government. Torres, a former leader of the National Action Party, was appointed coordinator of special programs, a position that gave him substantial influence but became problematic.

Initially, Torres acted almost as a vice governor, undermining the authority of other officials. The federal government began investigating him and his connections during Jaime Bonilla’s administration. Behind the scenes, he emerged as a key political operator, making decisions on urban projects and influencing contract allocations.

Rumors suggest that Ávila was not fully aware of her husband’s behind-the-scenes dealings but recognized that continuing this dynamic could harm her image. Thus, she opted for a strategic distancing, focusing on her political standing and stabilizing her administration.

Since Torres’ departure from his honorary role last month, the atmosphere in the state government has improved. Tensions eased, decisions became more straightforward, and the influence of those close to Torres diminished. However, questions about the couple’s relationship linger, with ongoing speculation about a possible separation.

No concrete evidence of a breakup has emerged, apart from Torres’ “voluntary” withdrawal from his duties to “attend to family matters.” A state official remarked, “Carlos was a significant presence at the beginning of the term, but now he is a problem they are trying to handle discreetly.”

A recent transformation is evident in Ávila’s leadership style. Embracing her solitude, she has decided to distance herself from any situation that could jeopardize her political future, especially given the possible misconduct of her political family. Her focus remains on survival and effective governance.
