Walmart Recalls Great Value Apple Juice Due to High Arsenic Levels
Walmart has issued a voluntary recall of nearly 10,000 cases of its Great Value brand apple juice due to concerns over elevated levels of inorganic arsenic. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) originally announced the recall on August 15, 2024, but later upgraded it to a Class II recall, indicating that consumption of the product could potentially cause temporary health effects.
The recall specifically involves 9,535 cases of 8-ounce Great Value apple juice bottles that may contain arsenic levels exceeding industry safety standards. The FDA has not reported any incidents of illness associated with the juices.
Manufactured by Refresco Beverages US Inc., the recalled products were sold in Walmart stores located across 25 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. The affected products are marked with a best if used by date of December 28, 2024.
Walmart has stated that customer health and safety is a top priority, and measures have been taken to remove the product from affected stores. The company is collaborating with the supplier to investigate the issue further.
Inorganic arsenic, which can have serious health implications, is found in some apple juice as well as other food products. The FDA has established a safety limit of 10 parts per billion for inorganic arsenic in apple juice as of 2023. It is important to note that while arsenic occurs naturally in the environment, it can also enter the food supply through various means, including contaminated drinking water and pesticides.
