LONDON, UK — Weight-loss injections have surged in popularity across the UK, with over 500,000 users, but concerns mount as hospitalizations rise. Since their introduction in 2019, nearly 400 users have been hospitalized, with a spike of 118 cases in October and November 2023 alone.
Dr. Helen Wall, a GP, and Dr. Aishah Iqbal, a weight-loss coach, explain that these injections mimic the GLP-1 hormone, delaying gastric emptying and suppressing appetite. “Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Saxenda are the common brands, each with different active ingredients but similar functions,” Dr. Iqbal noted.
While trials show significant weight loss, with Wegovy and Mounjaro varying between 15% to 23%, the benefits are short-lived. “Most patients regain weight within a year of stopping the medication,” Dr. Wall emphasized, highlighting the need for lifestyle changes alongside the injections.
Side effects are a growing issue, with reports of nausea, vomiting, and even life-threatening conditions like pancreatitis. “The drugs are relatively new, so more risks may emerge as usage expands,” Dr. Wall cautioned.
Despite their popularity, the injections are strictly prescribed, typically for those with a BMI over 35 or related health conditions. “The process is tight, pushing many to seek alternatives,” Dr. Iqbal added, warning against unregulated online purchases due to safety risks.
Experts advise consulting healthcare professionals and considering specialist services for a holistic approach. “Addressing the root causes is key to sustainable weight loss,” Dr. Wall stressed.
