West Virginia Winter Weather School Closures

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Multiple counties in West Virginia have announced school closures and delays due to severe winter weather that affected the region. The announcements were made on Thursday, February 20, 2025, in response to ongoing storms following recent flooding.

Boone, Cabell, Clay, Lincoln, Logan, Nicholas, and Wayne counties reported school closures for the day. Meanwhile, Kanawha, Calhoun, Roane, Fayette, Mason, Putnam, and Jackson counties confirmed delays in their schedules. The closures were prompted by adverse weather conditions, including significant snowfall, which has continued overnight.

This winter storm follows a period of heavy rainfall that caused flooding in many areas over the previous weekend. Education officials indicated that conditions remained unsafe for students and staff, prompting the decision to suspend classes in several districts.

“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” said a spokesperson for the West Virginia Department of Education. “With icy roads and the potential for more snowfall, keeping schools closed is the best course of action.”

In addition to these developments, McDowell County announced all schools will remain closed until further notice. Meanwhile, Wyoming and Summers County schools will also close on Friday, February 21, due to power outages affecting facilities.

Fayetteville PK-8 has announced a closure for Friday because of ongoing electrical issues. In contrast, schools in Fayette, Raleigh, and Monroe counties will operate on a two-hour delay. These modifications highlight the weather’s impact on day-to-day operations in the region.

The public can stay updated on the latest closures and delays through local news outlets and county school board websites. Residents are advised to remain cautious while traveling in light of current conditions. More information will be made available as weather forecasts are updated.
