Winter Storm Causes Crash Chaos on I-90, Roads Now Reopen

NORTH BEND, Wash. — I-90 was closed in both directions from North Bend to Ellensburg following multiple semi-truck crashes on March 13, 2025, due to heavy snowfall and fast-driving conditions.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reported that eastbound lanes were shut down near milepost 47 at Snoqualmie Pass, while westbound lanes were blocked at milepost 70 near Easton. Authorities warned that the closures would remain in effect until class C tow trucks arrived to clear the wreckage.
Trooper Rick Johnson with the Washington State Patrol (WSP) emphasized the dangers of winter driving conditions, advising, “#Reminder winter weather can and is still happening on #SnoqualmiePass. Follow the restrictions and be prepared for winter travel over the next few days.”
As of 11:20 p.m. on the same evening, the westbound lanes had reopened, followed by the eastbound lanes just before 9 p.m., according to WSDOT updates. The agency attributed the crashes to treacherous road conditions amplified by snow accumulation and drivers failing to adapt their speeds accordingly.
Trooper Johnson reiterated the importance of adhering to speed limits and enhancing vehicle preparedness during winter storms, stating, “It’s crucial for drivers to stay updated on travel conditions. We urge everyone to keep tire chains and emergency supplies handy.”
Travelers negotiating mountain passes should remain vigilant and equipped for sudden weather changes, particularly in winter months, as conditions can alter rapidly. WSDOT has recommended that motorists pack essential items such as extra gloves, blankets, food, and water in their emergency kits.
